King’s bed chamber and office of Changdeokgung palace in Seoul, Korea

 We will look around huijeongdang hall today. Huijeongdang was the King’s bed chamber that became his workplace. I’m sure you like the orientic and mysterious landscapes. Especially, huijeongdang hall is very unique and beautiful. Let`s start with its history.

If Injeongjeon was the symbolic main hall, then Huijeongdang was used as the actual main hall of Changdeokgung, where the king spent most of his time. The king’s office, Seonjeongjeon, was not large enough for conducting routine state affairs. As a result, Huijeongdang, which originally was the king’s bed chamber, came to serve as his workplace. Huijeongdang was destroyed by fire in 1917, and the existing building was rebuilt with materials taken from Gangnyeongjeon, the king’s residence at Gyeongbokgung. The original Huijeongdang depicted on the Map of the East Palace was an elegant building with a raised floor set on stone columns, and a pond in the courtyard. The reconstructed Huijeongdang is entirely different from the original. The interior is outfitted with western features such as wooden f loorboards and carpets, glass windows, and chandeliers. Huijeongdang is designated as a Treasure No. 815.

Huijeongdang hall next to Seonjeongjeon equipped a vehicle waiting area in the front.

The front building was a foyer equipped with western-style light and shoe rack inside.

T he foyer and Huijeongdang hall are connected by a corridor with a small side gate.

dThis is the west side of huijeongdang hall surrounded by small rooms and storage space whose doors are light green.

Passing the west side of huijeongang, there is Yohuimun gate into the west side of Daejojeon area, queen`s area.

Huijeongdang is connected to Daejojeon hall by a corridor in the air on both sides.

Huijeongdang originally built as a residential building became the king`s office later.

Among chimneys to heat the buildings, especially, the one of Huijeongdang is beautiful.

The exterior of Huijeongdang is Korean traditional but the interior is western in style.
